Siam benzoin resinoid, produced from the balsamic resin of Styrax tonkinensis. Distinct from Sumatra benzoin (Styrax benzoin), which is smokier, drier and less vanillic.
Siam benzoin is sweet, creamy and strongly vanillic, owing largely to its benzoic acid and vanillin content. It is a classic fixative and a natural sweetener in balsamic and oriental accords.
Supplied as a viscous, dark amber mass, normally handled as a dilution.
