Ylang-Ylang Extra is the first fraction drawn from a fractional distillation of Cananga odorata flowers. Fractions are collected sequentially — Extra, then First, Second and Third — from a single continuous run, with each successive cut heavier, less floral and less expensive than the last.

Extra carries the most volatile and most intensely floral material: creamy, banana-like, narcotic and slightly spicy, with a benzoate sweetness. It is the fraction used where ylang is to be a signature rather than a background floral.

Flowers are picked at dawn and distilled the same day; the fractional cut points are judged by the distiller, which means Extra from different producers is not strictly comparable.

What is the difference between Extra, First, Second and Third?
They are sequential fractions from one distillation, not different qualities of separate runs. Extra is collected first and carries the most volatile, most intensely floral material. Each later fraction is heavier, flatter and cheaper. 'Complete' is an unfractionated distillation run straight through, which is a different material again rather than a blend of the fractions.
