Sandalwood oil steam-distilled from Santalum album heartwood. The species is the reference sandalwood: soft, creamy, milky-woody and almost without sharp edges, with a tenacity measured in days rather than hours.

The character comes principally from alpha- and beta-santalol, and the ratio between them is the standard quality measure. Trees require decades to develop usable heartwood, which is the reason both for the price and for the state-level cultivation and movement controls that apply in India.

We list Santalum album only where cultivation and transit documentation is available. Material without it is not listed, regardless of price.

Store in full, tightly sealed amber glass or lined steel, away from light and heat, ideally between 4 and 15 °C. Headspace accelerates oxidation; decant into smaller vessels as stock is drawn down.
Allergens
Allergen content is determined per lot by analysis. Where an allergen declaration is listed for a lot, it reflects that lot only. Where no declaration is listed, none has been issued and none should be assumed.
Regulatory notes
Santalum album is not CITES-listed but is regulated at state level in India, with controls on cultivation, felling and movement. We require cultivation and transit documentation before listing.

What santalol content should I expect?
ISO 3518 sets expectations for Santalum album oil, and total santalol content is the standard measure. The figure for any given lot is stated in that lot's GC-MS report where one has been completed. We do not publish a nominal figure across the product, because it varies by tree age and distillation.
How does Santalum album differ from Australian sandalwood?
Santalum spicatum, the Australian species, is drier, more resinous and noticeably less creamy, with a green-woody edge S. album does not have. It is a distinct material rather than a cheaper grade of the same one, and it is not a drop-in substitute.
